Tena Koutou Katoa Nga Mihi Rongo Aio
For the last 3 years I have been creating Taonga Puoro, traditional sound instruments in wood, bone, stone, shell, fibre. Taonga Puoro are utilised in many ways for music, healing, ceremonial, communication ,mnemonics, sonics , hunting & much more. In this current series of works of mixed media artworks I have painted stories within the sound instruments shapes & also within sound influencing shapes of Taonga Puoro, such as insects & birds.
The Waitaha people’s tradition says in the first instance there was the great void Te Korekore which was full of silent waters. Then a huge sound filled this vast space, a karakia (sounds of power, prayer) a combination of many Tipua (Elementals) voices reverberating together.
Ko Tu Te Haruru ~ Tu the reverberating sound
Ko Tu Te Pakoko ~ Tu the shot blasting sound
Ko Tu Te Winiwini ~ Tu the shock wave sound
Ko Tu Te Wananawana ~ Tu the energy colliding sound
Ko Tu Te Pahukaha ~ Tu the gigantic blasting sound
Ko Tu Te Ru Atea ~ Tu the heaven shaking sound
Ko Tu Te Whaititiri ~ Tu the rolling thunder sound
Me Tu Te Uirauira ~ Tu the lightning blast sound
These sounds combined with Tipua o Nga Hau Hii (gases), they then became the forms that weave the fabric of the expanding universe.
In other Waitaha sound creation stories Te Pu Whakahara (Grandfather of the power of sounds in all its forms), Hine Raukarekare (Grandmother of sound waves & Karakia), & Rongo Marae Roa (Grandmother of healing sounds & listening) resonant the sounds here on Papatuanuku (Grandmother Earth).
This exhibition is homage to both the sound & instrument makers of Taonga Puoro.
